Brezno may not be the first name that comes to mind when planning a Slovak holiday — but look at the map and you'll immediately see why it's worth considering. The town sits in the heart of the Low Tatras mountain range and makes a perfect base for exploring the wider region. Whether you're visiting in summer for hiking or in winter for skiing, you can reach almost everything within 20 minutes by car.
The Low Tatras offer some of the finest hiking trails in Slovakia. From Brezno, you have direct access to the ridge trail that runs along the highest peaks of the range — a route popular with experienced hikers and day-trippers alike.
Chopok (2,024 m) is the iconic peak of the Low Tatras. In summer, you can hike up from the southern side via Čertovica, or take the cable car from the north at Jasná resort for a more relaxed ascent. Ďumbier (2,043 m), the highest peak in the range, is accessible from Závadka nad Hronom or Podbrezová — both just 15 minutes from Brezno by car. The views from the ridge on a clear day stretch across half of Slovakia.
About 40 km from Brezno, Demänovská Valley is one of Slovakia's most visited destinations. Home to both the Demänovská Ice Cave and the Cave of Liberty, the valley draws visitors year-round. In summer, easy trails follow the stream through beautiful forest scenery. In winter, the valley transforms into the gateway to Jasná ski resort.

The narrow-gauge forest railway — known locally as the Čiernohronská železnica — is one of the finest heritage railway experiences in Central Europe. Historic steam and diesel trains wind through spectacular Low Tatras woodland on a journey of around an hour. Čierny Balog is just 18 km from Brezno, making it an easy half-day trip.
Brezno has a recorded history stretching back to 1265. Its historic square, lined with the town hall and well-preserved merchant houses, is worth an afternoon stroll. The Horehronské Museum covers the history and folk traditions of the Hron valley region. From our apartment you can walk to the town centre in under 5 minutes.
