Historical roots of the fair

Brezno obtained market privileges as early as the 15th century, and since then town fairs have become an important part of economic and social life. The Ondrejský Jarmok, bearing the name of Saint Andrew, the patron of the local church, has from the beginning been linked to late autumn, when people prepared for winter and stocked their households with necessary goods. Over time, the markets expanded with accompanying cultural programs, creating an event that was not only a place of trade but also of meeting and entertainment.

A diverse offer of crafts and products

Today, the Ondrejský Jarmok attracts thousands of visitors not only from Horehronie but also from the wider area. The highlight of the event is a rich selection of traditional handicrafts—woodcarvings, ceramics, wicker baskets, leather goods, and gingerbread decorated with folk motifs. There are also stalls with homemade cheeses, smoked meats, honey, herbs, and spirits.

For many residents and visitors, the fair is associated with childhood memories—stalls with cotton candy, trdelník, walnut cakes, or toys that are still sold today. Traditional gastronomy complements the authentic atmosphere that distinguishes the fair from ordinary markets.

Cultural and social program

Alongside its commercial part, the Ondrejský Jarmok is also an important cultural event. The town square and adjacent streets become a stage for folklore ensembles, music bands, theatrical performances, and craft demonstrations. Especially popular are performances by children’s folklore groups, which recall the rich traditions of the Horehronie region.

There are also accompanying activities such as blacksmithing and pottery demonstrations, exhibitions, and creative workshops for children. In recent years, modern attractions, concerts by popular performers, and zones with regional specialties have been added.

A place of meetings and celebrations

The Ondrejský Jarmok holds a special significance for the people of Brezno and the Horehronie region. It is not only a place for shopping and entertainment, but also for meeting friends, family, and acquaintances. Many people who no longer live in Brezno plan their visit home precisely during the fair because it is associated with an exceptional atmosphere.

For the older generation, it is a reminder of the past and the values of their ancestors; for the younger, it is an opportunity to discover traditional crafts and folklore in a modern form.

A traditional fair with a modern spirit

Despite being firmly rooted in history, the Ondrejský Jarmok manages to adapt to the present. Thanks to this, it has become not only a bearer of traditions but also a modern event that brings together different generations. For Brezno and the entire region, the Ondrejský Jarmok is of great cultural and tourist significance and is among the events that can attract thousands of visitors every year.
